Yorkshire - Malhamdale & Aysgarth Falls

Continuing our week in Yorkshire.  Monday dawned bright and clear so we decided to head over to Malham and take one of the published walks.  We chose to walk the Malham Cove, Dry Valley, Malham Tarn and Pikedaw - 8 miles

Mostly enjoyable walk after you have climbed the 412 steps out of Malham Cove.  I honestly thought I was having a heart attack at one point.  Only thing that kept me going was a group of young lads doing their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, who seemed to be struggling too.  Though they were carrying all their camping kit but we jollied one another along.

Tuesday started out wet so we paid a visit to Hawes and the Wensleydale Creamery where we watched a demonstration of cheese making and then got to sample any number of cheeses that they make.  I'm not a great lover of Wensleydale cheese finding it a bit boring, but they do a really good aged one which I have just had a piece of for lunch.

After a stop for liquid refreshment we headed on to Aysgarth Falls - split into three levels there is a pleasant walk from the car park to each level.  I'm guessing these would look more spectacular in the spring when really full of water

We had now walked off the cheese samples, so decided on a cup of tea and a piece of cake before heading back to the cottage.  I really couldn't get the scale of Peter's flapjack, it was huge.  He did manage to eat most of it, I just helped out with a few of the nuts, along with the every present birds.  Btw who has cream on Lemon Drizzle cake?

Yorkshire Break

Hello all, we are just back from a great week in North Yorkshire. I've so many photos to share that I will split them over a few posts otherwise I'm sure you will all loose the will....

We took a leisurely drive up the A1 and then across to the A65 (scenic route), stopping in Skipton for lunch.  It was market day so the town was buzzing, its so great to see such a busy town with nearly all the shops occupied rather than boarded up as appears to be the norm these days.  A pretty town with a canal running through and we took a walk to stretch our legs.

After lunch we headed onto to Ingleton.  Parked up, then walked into 1940's England.  They were having a 40's weekend and everyone was dressed up, lots of music, reenactments. It was fun and certainly drew the visitors in

Our week started in Byber (Bideber) Mill cottage which is just outside of Ingleton on the North Yorkshire/Lancashire border.  A great base for the dales and moors plus easy access to the Lakes too.

A quiet cosy cottage at the end of a single track lane - luckily we only met one other vehicle in our week!  Julie the owner was very friendly and we were presented with a welcome basket which included the following: eggs from their chickens, milk, butter, homemade jam and marmalade, cereals and a fresh loaf of home baked bread.  Then if that wasn't enough she popped in later with a just out of the oven apple crumble.  A real treat.

Sunday - Ribblehead Viaduct - the link tells you all the interesting facts about the viaduct.  Its in daily use and we went across it some years back when we walked Hadrians Wall.  Some weekends they run old steam trains over and we were very lucky to experience the Flying Scotsman. It was so exciting and there is just something lovely about watching a train from a bygone era.  When I was talking to Julie the owner of the cottage yesterday she said she couldn't believe we had seen it, as her and her husband never have.  Lucky I guess. There are plenty of walks leading off over the moors, we wandered for a while but as we hadn't come prepared ie: water and walking poles - its not flat round here!!  We didn't venture too far, saving that for later in the week.  And boy did we walk
