Lockdown 3 - day 39

Day 39 crazy times

I picked up some Seville oranges today and decided to prep for marmalade making tomorrow. I had thought we wouldn’t need any this year but Peter has been going through it at a rate of knots so it won’t last the year out unless I do.

We decided we would see if the lakes were walkable this afternoon, but alas no, right over the pathway in places and very soft in others despite the frigid weather.  We only actually stayed out a short while 1.5 miles, it was just too cold.

The highlight of my day was a trip to see the surgery nurse for cervical screening.  It’s something us ladies hate but wearing a face mask sure helps with the embarrassment. We shouldn’t be embarrassed, it’s essential but you always feel like you are being judged!!

Lockdown 3 - day 38

Goodness it’s a cold one today, but oh so bright and sunny

This morning we popped to Huntingdon to collect a parcel and did a quick scout round Lidl and Aldi

Then after lunch we wrapped up and went for a walk. As you can see the water has subsided enough for us to walk over to Houghton Mill and then on to St Ives via the Thicket - 6.5 miles

It really is amazing that the water has gone down since the start of the week. Grass peeking through where there was water

The river and lock so calm since last we were here

New growth

Hazy sun over the river

Poor tree

Church gate tops

Car park finally putting in an appearance

I wore my new hat and mitts today they were very cosy.

Dinner this evening is Enchiladas, takeaway tomorrow, we never got one last week in the end as Peter wasn’t feeling too good. Indian I’m thinking, they will deliver so we won’t have to turn out in the cold!

Lockdown 3 - day 37

It’s so funny this yarn has sat in my stash for a long time. Every time I looked at it I felt it was too bright but adding the strand of black glitter has transformed it. I love it. The hat completed and mitts started.

We walked around the village outskirts today for a change, actually achieving 4 miles which was a pleasant surprise. The flooded fields are transformed from brown ploughed land to sparkling frozen and frosted lakes

Silk tassel bush in all its glory

Flooded lane to the Hemingford Meadows

The following photos were taken by my husband this afternoon. He finally got himself a new iPhone and is discovering the joy of instant photography!

I stayed home and finished the mittens. There is still enough yarn to make a cowl, then I must get back to my cardigan and cushion cover

Whilst I knit I listen to books on Audible, I just finished this book which I thoroughly enjoyed and also had a bit of an American history lesson too. A great read. I loved the Nightingale by this author too, I have a list of her earlier books on my wish list so plan to work my way through them.

I do enjoy a physical book but audiobooks enable me to knit and listen (read) at the same time.  For reading in bed I have a selection of titles by Anne Tyler on the bedside table that I’m working through.  What are you currently reading? Any recommendations?

Lockdown 3 - day 36

New hat from yarn that’s been hanging around for years. I felt in need of a new project now I have got to the sleeves of my cardigan. Just some instant gratification

We have had flurries of snow on and off today, nothing much.

Snow capped mole  hills

Soggy grass

Iced hedgerow

Frosted plants

We walked as usual for want of something to do, taking our wellies with us so we could walk the common without getting muddy. So much better. Flooding still prevents us from going to Houghton Mill and beyond, so we are limited as to walking options in lockdown. Oh to get into the car and drive to the coast.

Peter had the fidgets this afternoon so took himself off for another walk whilst I worked on the hat. He missed a FaceTime call from the little ones, who called with tales of bodily noises which they find amusing!  Jess says she doesn’t like to FaceTime as it’s not the same and if she can’t have a cuddle what’s the point. I must admit it always feel forced, I much prefer to have a conversation that just flows from doing things together, sharing moments. We miss them all so much.

It really does look like it’s going to be a long time before our lives are going to be anywhere like normal.

Lockdown 3 - day 35

Ok, I forgot to post yesterday. This was the sum total of our snow. Nothing to write home about

Cold walk into St Ives to drop off some knitted doll and teddy clothes for the little ones. A quick doorstep chat then a stop at Quayside to check the swans and river levels. A flask of Baileys laced hot chocolate to warm us up

A quiet afternoon knitting on my cardigan, I’m onto the sleeves now.

Candle light cosiness and that was our day

We have woke to a further dusting of snow, so will await further developments - no plans to speak of. Catch you later

Lockdown 3 - day 34

Hello and how is your weekend going?  It’s so cold here today. Icy wind but as yet no snow. The forecast keeps moving it.

Peter is looking and feeling better today, which is great. We took ourselves off for a walk this morning, deciding just to head into St Ives as the overnight rain has made the field paths like soup. We did collect a hot chocolate and sit by the river for a short while but it was just too cold not to be moving.

It is a watery landscape which ever way you looked, the levels have been up and down so much over the last 7 weeks it’s hard to know where it all comes from. We could really do with a spell of consistently dry weather so that the ground has a chance to revive itself. We were saying where do all the rabbits and the like go when the water floods in?  Poor things.

I’m finding myself unable to settle to anything much today. I keep picking up my knitting doing a row then putting it down. Picking up the phone and looking at random stuff, wasting time really. I can’t decide what to cook for dinner. I have some chicken out, lots of different vegetables but nothing is calling to me. I’d actually just like to go OUT for dinner, not a takeaway, a meal cooked for me either in a restaurant or at or with family members. I’m frankly loosing the will to keep this solitary life going to the point I delay getting out of bed simply because I know there is nothing different to do.

Sorry to be moaning I didn’t actually start this post with a moan in mind xx

Lockdown 3 - day 33

Hello Saturday.

I had a sort of near normal morning, I went into St Ives for the Farmers Market and met our youngest daughter for coffee and a long overdue chat. We found a bench undercover of the rain and along with takeout drinks from Lorenzo’s in The Courtyard  put the world to rights. She decided against bringing the grandchildren simply to give her a break and to be honest it was so wet the children would have been bored in no time.

The reason I was on my own is that Peter wasn’t feeling too good after his vaccine yesterday. 💉 He had a very bad night, headache, hot, nausea 🤢  So I left him in bed to try and sleep it off. 🛌 He was up when I got back looking marginally better and after some lunch and a Star Bar 🍫 that I bought him he’s perked up. So hopefully that’s the only reaction 🤞

He had the AstraZeneca one which by all accounts has more side affects due to the nature of the vaccine. Of course you have no idea which vaccine is on offer when you go, but just thankful of getting it.
