Suffolk Secrets - Orford thereabouts

Saturday 15th - our 45th wedding anniversary! It really is so hard to believe that so many years have elapsed.  Anyone would think we were old!

The day started grey. The plan for the week was not to cook and do lots of walking. With this in mind we headed out to find breakfast.

The tearooms in the Quay serve breakfast and are open every day bar Monday. As you can see Peter set himself up with a full English and I had a bacon bap. Both were good.

Once breakfast was demolished we set off along the river bank towards Aldeburgh in the far distance.  It’s around 5 miles to where the river turns inland. A pleasant walk once you clear the much walked muddy parts of the track. The island of Orford Ness is on the other side of the river. This island is run by the National Trust and was a weapons research centre in a past life. Now it is home to wildlife, it is accessible April to October via ferry.

We did see the sun for a short while, otherwise it was mainly overcast.

We spotted these deer coming along the fence line and I did manage to capture them on video

Once leaving the river bank the rest of the walk was either field tracks or quiet side roads. We clocked up an impressive 11.5 miles

As it was our special day we had booked a table at the Crown and Castle, just round the corner from our cottage.

I started with locally smoked salmon whilst Peter went with the local oysters

We both had venison with buttered greens and truffle and Parmesan fries - oh the fries so so moreish.  The venison was pretty good too, though I could have eaten it twice!

Desserts were less than impressive, mine below was lemon meringue gingerbread - yes that’s dollops of lemon ??? with shards of meringue and crumbs of gingerbread!

Peter’s was sticky date pudding with toffee bananas - what he got was a lump of cold cake and some just warm banana with a squirt of toffee sauce. Luckily the gin and tonic and a great bottle of Sancerre helped mitigate the disappointing desserts

All in all an enjoyable evening anyway
