Suffolk Secrets - Snape to Iken

Monday 17th January

Today we woke to sunshine and frosty temperatures. Glorious.

We decided that a walk from Snape Maltings to Iken Church was the plan for the day. Followed by lunch - fish and chips in Aldeburgh and a stroll after to check out the Martello tower we had spied whilst walking in the other side of the river on Saturday.

First stop was coffee and toasted teacake to start us off.  Snape Maltings has a new cafe in the concert hall which overlooks the marshes, a great venue for coffee or lunch. Much better than their previous cafe.

It was a lovely walk to the church along the edge of the marshes. Muddy in a few places but passable. The church overlooks the marsh but you have to walk inland slightly as you aren’t able to access it directly. Unless you want wet feet.

The church is Anglo Saxon - Iken Church

I love the flint decorations on the back of the church

Also the decorative chimneys on a nearby property

We had only been at the church for around 30 minutes but when we got back to the marsh the tide had come in!! We did manage to work our way across without getting wet. I made Peter go first just to check. There is a video of me coming across, of course there is, but it won’t load here but you can see it on Instagram @grannysworld_sue if you want a laugh. There was an alternative route but that would involve walking back and going via the road, we like a challenge and fortunately we didn’t get wet.

Lunch in Aldeburgh - I ended up sharing my fish with a gull who flew in a grabbed it out of my hand.  They really take liberties, scared the life out of me.

Walk along the promenade towards the Martello Tower

This was the furthest point of Orford Ness, which as you can see is a restricted area.  The Ness as previously mentioned is only accessible in part from Orford Quay. I’m not sure if there is any security, but a lone fisherman climbed over with his gear and obviously wasn’t too bothered!!

Another lovely day we walked a total of  9.1 miles
